Appellant sought reversal of a decision upholding a disciplinary decision issuing a 30-minute detention given by a teacher to Lonnie, who is a ninth grade student. Ordinarily a teacher-issued detention does not come to the attention of building or district administrators. However, Lonnie did not report to the teacher's classroom to serve his detention. The teacher reported the failure to the administrators. The District characterized Lonnie's violation as "unacceptable hall behavior."
The Board members were convinced that the 30-minute detention was not "unreasonable." The totality of the circumstances concerned the Board and it believed justified the detention. Board took no action on the administration's recommendation that Lonnie serve the detention. Granted the Board gave more credence to the administration and its teacher than to Lonnie, but that is within the Board's discretion and authority.
That the January 12, 2004, decision by the Board of Directors of the Burlington Independent Community School District be affirmed.
