The appellants are seeking reversal of a decision made by the Sutherland Community School District to close a school in Calumet, IA.

The school was built in mid-1920s with the addition of a gym, shop, stage, and music room in the 1950's. In January and February of 1984, the superintendent recommended closing the school except for the gym; the board did not pass this recommendation.

On July 30, the board voted to close the school after considerable discussion and participation by the community. The public meetings for the community to express its opinion were not timely scheduled and public notice given.

The local board's decision is reversed.
